Since taking residence in Southeast Asia in 1989, Blenkinsop’s name has become synonymous with forgotten conflicts and the photography of injustice. Described as "a man of guerrillas and of resistances" (Herve Le Goff), and "one of the most essential photographers of his generation" (Christian Caujolle).
He has become a strong voice in the pro-advocacy debate within the media. His work has been the catalyst for political discourse and debate, including within the US Congress where he lobbied personally for the United States to intervene in the ongoing genocide by the Lao Government against the Hmong militias who fought for the USA during the American War in Indochina.
Blenkinsop is adamant that the photographer should never censor scenes through the camera. “Photographers are both witness and messenger. Our responsibility must always lie with the people we focus on, and with the accurate depiction of their plight, regardless of how unpalatable this might be for magazine readers.”
Monographs of his work include The Cars That Ate Bangkok (White Lotus) and Extreme Asia (Photo Poche Société).
In 2009, acclaimed film director, David Bradbury released his 70m documentary on Blenkinsop and his work entitled ‘My Asian Heart’.
In 2007 Blenkinsop co-founded Noor Photo Agency. He sits on the advisory boards of the Program for Narrative and Documentary Practice at The Institute for Global Leadership, Tufts University, USA and the Kathmandu Photo Festival.
In 2012, Falmouth University made him an Honorary Fellow for his services to Photojournalism.
Blenkinsop is an Emeritus Member of VII Photo Agency.
As Festival and Content Manager, Anne Colenbrander is responsible for the development of the content strategy and programming at the World Press Photo Foundation’s house in Amsterdam, the annual World Press Photo Festival, and affiliated projects.
In her current role, Colenbrander’s main focus is on developing and implementing a program of events and activities that cater to both the foundation’s network of professionals working in visual storytelling, and a wider audience.
A creative and strategic thinker, Colenbrander works to develop initiatives with like-minded institutions, always looking for new, diverse and inspiring collaborations with major contentpartners on a local and (inter)national level.
Before starting at World Press Photo in 2015, Colenbrander spent almost 10 years at FoamFotografiemuseum Amsterdam in various roles, including manager of different project spaces, Foam Bookshop Manager and manager of Foam Magazine.
Colenbrander has an MA in Language and Culture Studies, specialising in American Studies with a focus on political history and civil rights.
Mario Cruz is an independent Portuguese photographer whose work focuses on social injustice and human rights issues.
His work has received international recognition. Cruz is a two time recipient of the World Press Photo award for his projects: “Talibes: Modern Day Slaves” and “Living Among What’s Left Behind.” He was also awarded with the Estacao Imagem Award, Picture of the Year and Magnum Photography Award.
His work has been published in Newsweek, The New York Times, Washington Post, CNN, El Pais, CTXT and Neue Zurcher Zeitung.
Cruz is author of two books: Talibes Modern Day Slaves, published in 2016 by FotoEvidence and
“Living Among What’s Left Behind.”
David Gonzalez is a photographer and journalist who was born and raised in the Bronx, which he began to photograph in the late 1970’s while an undergraduate at Yale. He has been the co-editor of the New York Times Lens blog and also did the biweekly Side Street column for the paper’s Metro section. Prior to that, he was the Central America/Caribbean Bureau Chief, About New York Columnist and Bronx Bureau Chief.
A graduate of Columbia’s Journalism School, he has also was a correspondent for Newsweek Magazine in Detroit, Miami and New York. He is a member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Hall of Fame, and was among the recipients of this year’s Alumni Award from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism.
Prior to entering journalism, he worked at En Foco, as well as the National Puerto Rican Forum. He is a founding member of Seis del Sur, a collective of Nuyorican photographers whose work has been exhibited at the Bronx Documentary Center, NYU’s King Juan Carlos I Center and the Bronx Music Heritage Center.
Jessica Lim is currently the director of the non-profit Angkor Photo Festival & Workshops which takes place annually in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Prior to joining the festival in 2010, she was a news and photo journalist in Singapore before serving as a photo and news editor at Drik Picture Library in Dhaka, Bangladesh, as well as a photographer liaison for Majority World, a photo agency which advocates for equal opportunities and diversity for photographers.
Currently the Head of Market Photo Workshop in Johannesburg South Africa, Lekgetho James Makola sits on the International Advisory Committee to the Board of CatchLight – San Francisco, and Curatorial Advisory Committee of the 2017 Bamako Encounters - Mali. He has been in the judging panels for number of national and international Photography and Arts Awards in the past 4 years, including World Press Photo 2019. He recently participated as a reviewer in the 2018 New York Times Portfolio Review. Lekgetho sits on the Art Bank of South Africa Acquisition Committee 2018/2019.
Lekgetho, born in Ga-Sekhukhune in Limpopo, has a Fine Art degree from Durban University of Technology in Durban, South Africa. His artistic achievements include a Bronze Sculpture commission for President Nelson Mandela. He is an International Ford Foundation Fellow on Social Justice 2009, and a Graduate of Howard University in Washington DC USA with a MFA in Film Studies 2013. He worked for the Durban Art Museum, Robben Island Museum including an internship at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam. He co-founded Kali TV in Washington DC 2012, an online media platform reporting news on Diaspora communities in the USA. He is a founding member of Parallel Film Collective Washington DC, 2012, a non-profit organization focusing on 'Local Equals Global' film culture with the idea that stories of everyday people are worth being told
He also founded an independent production company KGETHI IMAGES (Pty)Ltd in August 2014 South Africa, which focuses on film, photography and art productions. Lekgetho is an active member of the virtual continental network Centers of Learning for Photography in Africa.
David Stuart is a co-founder of FotoEvidence. As the managing editor he contributed to the development of the annual FotoEvidence Book Award with World Press Photo and edited the texts for more than twenty books of photography.
He is a sociologist with an interest in human rights that began as a teenager at the United Nations International School in New York. In a previous incarnation, he was a founder of the Freelance Players (now Rehearsal for Life) an educational theater organization in Boston. He spent five years as the Executive Director of the Disarmament Action Network working with a coalition of organizations to mobilize opposition to US military and foreign policy. He spent eight years with the Boston College Media Research and Action Project designing and analyzing research on the mass media and political discourse. He has managed political campaigns and worked as a consultant to business, social movement and non-profit organizations.
Laura El-Tantawy is a British/Egyptian documentary photographer, artful book maker & mentor. Born in Worcestershire, UK, she studied in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the US & UK. Her work explores notions of home & belonging. It is recognised for its uniquely lyrical eye on reality.
Laura’s self-published monographs have garnered multiple international accolades. In 2015 she released her first title “In the Shadow of the Pyramids”, a first-person account exploring memory & identity. The publication was internationally hailed & earned the shortlist for the prestigious Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize – awarded annually to an artist of any nationality who has made the most significant contribution to photography in Europe.
She subsequently self-published two other titles: “The People” (2015), a newsprint celebrating the Egyptian Revolution of 2011; “Beyond Here Is Nothing” (2017), a meditation on home & belonging. In 2019 she released her fourth monograph, “A Star in the Sea”, an artistic contemplation on embracing the unexpected.
Laura’s engagement with photo books is motivated by her belief in the book as an experiential object — a craft of limitless possibility transporting viewers on a journey through feelings, experiences and stories in a stimulating and thought provoking way.
Her goal as an artist is to produce unique and thought-provoking work. She often collaborates with like-minded individuals, institutions & organizations driven to inform responsibly, contribute positive change to the world & encourage stimulating thought & creativity.
Yukiko Yamagata is acting director for the Open Society Foundations Documentary Photography Project, which promotes diverse forms of socially engaged documentary practice, ranging from photography and video installation, to emerging and interactive media. Through grant making, exhibitions, and public programs, the Documentary Photography Project supports visual media that empowers, challenges harmful narratives, and mobilizes people around issues of justice and human rights. Yamagata also serves as chief curator for the Open Society's Moving Walls exhibition series. In 2014, she co-curated with Susan Meiselas and Stuart Alexander the touring exhibition “Watching You, Watching Me,” featuring 10 artists using photography to reflect on the theme of surveillance. The show traveled to venues in Berlin, Budapest, Brussels, and New York. Prior to joining Open Society in 2005, she worked at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, conducting research for the “In Motion: The African American-Migration Experience” exhibition, book, website, and digital archive. She began her career at the Whitney Museum of American Art’s Department of Photography providing curatorial support for a range of exhibitions including solo exhibitions of work by Roni Horn, Ryan McGinley, Susan Meiselas, Vik Muniz, Michal Rovner, and Lorna Simpson.
ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE PUBLISHES ABOUT NO PLACE ON EARTH
On the second anniversary of the Rohingya genocide, Rolling Stone magazine publishes a discussion of the book No Place on Earth by Patrick Brown, recipient of the 2019 FotoEvidence Book Award with World Press Photo. The book was published by FotoEvidence and available in our bookstore on line and Amazon.
Patrick Brown wins the 2019 FotoEvidence Book Award with World Press Photo
Mikael Owunna for “Limitless Africans”. The work is a collaborative response between the photographer and his community, to re-define what it means to be an immigrant, African and queer in North America and Europe at this time.
Fausto Podavini for “OMO Change.” The work aims to be a meditation on how large-scale investments can put at risk a delicate balance between humans and their environment that has persisted for hundreds of years.
Brown’ work will be published in a hardbound FotoEvidence book to be released this spring. Brown, Owunna and Podavini will be exhibited at the World Press Photo exhibit in Amsterdam in April and at the FotoEvidence Book Award Exhibit in New York at the Bronx Documentary Center, opening May 30th 2019.

FotoEvidence Women is a new chapter of FotoEvidence Press, a space for free expression, devoted to engaged women photographers who want to tell their stories in the form of a photo book. Through their lenses women can shape the world differently and we want to give them this chance.
At this moment, women around the world are seeking equal rights and equal opportunity. The FotoEvidence W Award for Personal Story will suppot this movement. It will be granted by a selection committee to one woman whose work merits a book. The hardbound book will be published by FotoEvidence. Two other photographers will receive honorable mentions. Through their lenses women can shape the world differently and we want to give them this chance.
Danielle Villasana, finalist of the 2018 FotoEvidence Book Award with World Press will sign her new book A Light Inside. Joa Pina will be signing his third book 46750. Eglish edition published by FotoEvidence.
Svetlana became a photojournalist during the transition from dictatorship to democracy in her native Bulgaria. Passionate about social justice she joined the first democratic newspaper “Democrazia,” documenting the end of a long lasting Communist regime. For seven years she served as the chief photographer for the newspaper. In 1997 Svetlana moved on to become the first woman chief photographer for the Bulgarian News Agency.
In 2001, Svetlana moved to New York where she and her partner David Stuart founded FotoEvidence in the tradition of using photography to draw attention to injustice, oppression and assaults on human dignity wherever they may occur. FotoEvidence is now internationally recognized as a premier publisher of documentary photography and an active partner with human rights organizations.
For seven years, the FotoEvidence Book Award recognized one photographer whose work demonstrates courage and commitment in the pursuit of social justice and, in 2017, FotoEvidence partnered with World Press Photo. The book award was renamed the FotoEvidence Book Award with World Press Photo. The selected project is published by FotoEvidence as part of a series of photo books dedicated to the work of photographers, whose commitment and courage deliver painful truths, creating awareness and intolerance towards violations of human dignity.
Lars Boering (The Netherlands) was born in Amsterdam in 1969 and studied Communication Science at the University of Amsterdam.
Lars has advised photographers about funding and their business models and has worked with several partners in the publishing and advertising industries. He has taught at academies throughout the world and has been involved as advisor and curator for festivals, museums, publishing houses and other institutions, and is an experienced keynote speaker and moderator at the highest levels.
Lars was appointed managing director of the World Press Photo Foundation in January 2015. He lives in Amsterdam with his wife, two sons, and a daughter.
The winner of the 2018 FotoEvidence Book Award with World Press Photo is First Nation photojournalist Josué Rivas for his project “Standing Strong” about the spiritual awakening that occurred among the people resisting the Dakota Access pipeline.
The finalists are Zackery Canepari for “Flint is a Place,” an exploration of the challenges of life in Flint, Michigan, and Danielle Villasana for “The Light Inside” a compelling story about the struggle of trans women in Peru.
Rivas’ work will be published in a hardbound FotoEvidence book to be released this spring. Rivas, Canepari and Villasana will be exhibited at the World Press Photo exhibit in Amsterdam opening April 14th and at the FotoEvidence Book Award Exhibit in New York at the Bronx Documentary Center, opening June 2nd.
Gary Knight is withdrawing from the 2018 FotoEvidence Book Award with World Press photo jury to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest.
Gary Knight, who was on the jury for the 2018 FotoEvidence Book Award with World Press Photo, is withdrawing from the judging to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest. Gary learned there were a number of submissions from close associates among the entries and did not feel it was right for him to judge them.
FotoEvidence and World Press Photo understand the reason for Gary's withdrawal. We are sorry to lose his input but appreciate his integrity which is in line with the ethics of the award.
The jury will proceed with five members: Svetlana Bachevanova, Lars Boering, Jen Tse, Peter van Agtmael and Daniella Zalcman.
In this testimony to a committee of the European Parliament, photojournalist Mario Cruz tells the story of how he followed a trail of missing children to discover a vast system of modern day slavery under the guise of education in Senegal.
His work about talibés won recognition from World Press Photo and FotoEvidence published his book, “Talibés Modern Day Slaves.” The international exhibition of his work and the long-form documentation provided by the book, with texts in English, French, Portuguese and Arabic, prodded the President of Senegal to order the registration of all daaras (private schools) in the country. In the initial weeks after the President's order, more than 3,000 young boys were removed from the streets of Dakar and placed in shelters or sent home, if their home could be determined. This is a small percentage of the more than 50,000 talibés that Human Rights Watch estimates suffer exploitation and abuse in some of Dakar's daaras, but it represents a first step in a long process to address the institutionalized abuse of children in Senegal.
In bringing this issue to the European Parliament Cruz continues his advocacy on behalf of Senegal's talibés. The European Parliament responded by declaring their intention to urgently investigate the issue and bring further pressure on Senegal to dismantle the illegitimate daaras that abuse children.
FotoEvidence Book Award and the World Press Photo Foundation announce a new collaboration
FotoEvidence will also exhibit the work of the winner and finalists at 2018 FotoEvidence Book Award exhibit in New York in the fall of 2018. The award winner will be invited to New York to participate in EXPOSE, a one-day workshop that will connect students with the winner to learn from his or her experience and to receive feedback on their long-term projects.

Peter van Agtmael

Peter van Agtmael was born in Washington DC in 1981. He studied history at Yale, graduating with distinction in 2003.
His work largely concentrates on America, looking at issues of conflict, empire, power, race and class. He has worked extensively in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Israel/Palestine. He has been awarded the W. Eugene Smith Grant, the ICP Infinity Award for Young Photographer, the Lumix Freelens Award, the Aaron Siskind Grant, a Magnum Foundation Fellowship as well as multiple awards from World Press Photo, American Photography Annual, POYi, The Pulitzer Center, The Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University, FOAM and Photo District News.
His book, 'Disco Night Sept 11,' on America at war in the post-9/11 era was released in 2014. Disco Night Sept 11 was shortlisted for the Aperture/Paris Photo Book Award and was named a ‘Book of the Year’ by The New York Times Magazine, Time Magazine, Mother Jones, Vogue,
American Photo and Photo Eye.
"Buzzing at the Sill," a book about America in the shadow of the wars, was released in the Spring of 2017. Upon pre-release, it was named one of Time’s “Photo Books of the Year” for 2016 and shortlisted for the 2017 Rencontres D’Arles Author Book Award.
He is a founder and partner of Red Hook Editions, a publishing company based in Brooklyn. He is a mentor in the Arab Documentary Photography Program in Beirut.
Peter joined Magnum Photos in 2008 and became a member in 2013. He currently serves on the board of Magnum Photos Inc. and the Magnum Foundation.
Lars Boering was born 1969 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and studied Communication Science at the University of Amsterdam. From 1998 he was curator and later managing director of the Amsterdam Art Foundation, buying photography for their large collection. In 2008 Boering became an independent advisor and entrepreneur in photography and founded Lux Photo Gallery. He has advised photographers about funding and business opportunities, and has worked with several partners in the publishing and advertising industries. In 2010 Boering co-founded the ‘Photography masterclass Amsterdam for advanced storytelling’ where he still teaches. He has taught at masterclasses and academies throughout the world, and has been involved as curator for festivals, museums, publishing houses and other institutions, producing artwork and exhibitions for them. As managing director of the Dutch Photographers’ association (FotografenFederatie) from 2010 to 2014, Boering advised photographers on copyright issues and entrepreneurial skills. He was appointed managing director of the World Press Photo Foundation in January 2015. Lars Boering lives in Amsterdam with his wife, two sons and a daughter.

Inspired by the journalism from Vietnam and Cambodia during the American wars of the 1960’s and 70’s Gary Knight travelled to Indochina in the late 1980’s to build a career as a photographer. He subsequently worked for Newsweek Magazine as a contract photographer covering wars and human rights stories all over the world for the following two decades. He is co-founder and principal architect of the VII Photo Agency and of
The VII Foundation and the founding Director of the Program for Narrative & Documentary Practice at the Institute for Global Leadership at Tufts University where he teaches a course in non-fiction storytelling. He was a Fellow at the Nieman Foundation at Harvard University in 2009 and a Fellow at the Logan Non-Fiction Program at the Carey Institute in 2017.
Gary is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Frontline Club, London; co-founder and Board member of The GroundTruth Project, Boston; twice Chair and President of the World Press Photo Award.
Jen Tse is Newsweek's Photo Editor, based in New York. Prior to Newsweek, she worked for TIME Magazine, NOOR Images, and 500px.
Daniella Zalcman (b. 1986) is a documentary photographer based in London and New York. She is a multiple grantee of the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, a fellow with the International Women’s Media Foundation, and a member of Boreal Collective. She is also the founder of Women Photograph, an initiative to elevate the voices of female and nonbinary visual journalists.
Her work tends to focus on the legacies of western colonization, from the rise of homophobia in East Africa to the forced assimilation education of Indigenous children in North America. Her ongoing project Signs of Your Identity has been recognized with the 2017 Arnold Newman Prize, a 2017 RFK Journalism Award, the 2016 Magnum Foundation Inge Morath Award, and the 2016 FotoEvidence Book Award.
Daniella’s work regularly appears in The Wall Street Journal, Mashable, the BBC, and CNN, among others. She graduated from Columbia University with a degree in architecture in 2009.

In 2017 the FotoEvidence Book Award was granted to photographer Poulomi Basu for her work, “Blood Speaks: A Ritual of Exile.” After the award was granted and before the book was published, allegations of ethical misconduct on the part of the photographer came to our attention. Our investigation of the allegations raised doubts about Basu’s account of an incident in question about her conduct during the creation of the work. We concluded that at least one of Basu’s captions contained misleading information. In consultation with the 2017 jury, FotoEvidence chose to withdraw the 2017 award and halt the publication of the book.
This was a very difficult decision for everyone involved. FotoEvidence still believes the project, “Blood Speaks: A Ritual of Exile” has significant value but, because of our commitment to the highest ethical standards in photojournalism, doubts about the validity of any part of the work compel us to abstain from publishing the book.
Daniella Zalcman wins the Robert Kennedy Award for Photography-International with her work "Signs of Your Identity". Last year , Daniella was was granted for the same work with the 2016 FotoEvidence Book Award and "Signs of Your Identity" published in a book.

Bronx Boys is an intimate photo essay about the lives of young people in the Bronx during the 1970s, 80s, and 90s.
